Tornadoes in Dallas

Tornadoes in DallasA pair of violent twisters pummeled towns around Dallas on Tuesday, flattening homes, flipping tractor-trailers and grounding flights but not causing widespread injuries or deaths. Starting at around 1:30 p.m., severe thunderstorms caught residents by surprise and continued for more than two hours, according to the National Weather Service. The agency counted at least two tornadoes touching down around the Dallas-Fort Worth area and received 12 reports of tornadoes in Dallas, Texas.

Two “large and extremely dangerous” tornadoes ripped through the Dallas region on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. The twisters caused damage within the southern limits of the city, tossed trucks in the air, and left tractors scattered across the highway, the AP reports. “Considerable damage” was also reported near Cleburne, a city south of Fort Worth, and Lancaster, a city south of Dallas, according to the service. Flights from Dallas-Fort Worth Airport were delayed.

Three confirmed tornadoes charged through the heart of the Dallas- Ft. Worth area earlier today leaving behind pockets of severe damage. One ripped through Arlington and a second through southeast Dallas county (around Lancaster) between 2 and 3 p.m. ET. A third twister tore through Forney, east of town, between 4 and 5 p.m. ET. The NBC Dallas news affiliate in Dallas, streaming live coverage of one of the tornadoes, called the tornado swarm “a nightmare scenario” of tornadoes in Dallas.

Tornadoes did heavy damage in Kennedale, Arlington and southern Dallas County, including Lancaster, which has declared a State of Disaster. A tornado grounded on the west side of Forney and hit Crosby Elementary. Kids were moved out beforehand, so all students and staff are safe.

Arlington police say no serious injuries have been reported in Arlington, which has suffered some of the worst damage today. A tornado in Dallas clipped off part of the wing of the Green Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center near Lake Arlington, which displaced 131 residents and staff but caused only two minor injuries, the Associated Press reported.
